Media Experience

In the Media Track students are assigned to cover everything going on during SSI and produce daily newspapers along with nightly news broadcasts during the week. All of the students eagerly await the paper each day. They read feature stories, news stories, quotable quotes and a lot more. The interaction between the “public” and the “media” at SSI mirrors the real world. One of the jokes throughout SSI is, “Everything you say will be misquoted and used against you.” It is all done with great fun and energy and the students love reading about themselves and seeing themselves on the video screen during the News Broadcasts.

The level of creativity is astounding, especially since most of them have little or no experience in the media to begin with. The alumni who sign up for the Media Track take seriously their job of keeping the public informed about what is going on in the SSI world. They cover everything that happens including the morning devotions, lectures, special speakers, caucus meetings, press conferences, trips to the Capitol, recreation, Committee Hearings, final presentations and so much more.

At least twice a week, the SSI Action News presents a 5-10 minute broadcast with news anchors, special features and sometimes even a commercial or two. Through a generous grant, we have been able to acquire excellent cameras and editing software that make the broadcast possible.Media students learn Journalism, Reporting, Writing and research, Editing, Videography, Photography, and Media Ethics.

It is exciting to see the reporters learn how to conduct interviews with VIP’s like the Secretary of State or a Supreme Court Justice, and how to create a story using video and audio. One year, they even interviewed the camera man from a local TV station who was at the Capitol to cover the Committee Hearings for a real news story

As with all of the tracks, we bring experts in to coach the students. We’ve had the benefit of some excellent reporters, press secretaries, and communications specialists who volunteer their time and expertise. Each student in our advanced tracks sit in on advanced Biblical Worldview sessions, taught by qualified instructors, that expand upon the foundational curriculum they received in their first year(s) of attending SSI
